If you've been watching Formula 1 for a long time, you'd have seen quite a few camera angles that are used during a race broadcast. Since race circuits are pretty huge and one can't put a camera at every step of the way, atleast inexpensively, FOM makes do with a few static cameras operated by cameramen, some on booms and helicopters. You would find booms being used generally on the inside of hairpins and/or tight corners and helicopters to cover pretty much any part of the circuit.
The heli shots at the long straights of the A1 ring are one of my favourite. But they also had the asphalt level shots from Canada near the wall and some other circuits. But by far my favourite shots were the onboard ones where the camera was placed behind the steering wheel and you could see the driver. I haven't seen those in a long while. Another frequent complaint of mine is that while their camera work is competent, we don't really get to appreciate the features of the track itself all that much. Drivers talk about camber and uphill and downhill sections of the track and on TV it doesn't really come across all that well. Take Monaco for example. The uphill section after turn 1 is quite steep and yet even onboard cameras don't do it justice. Compare for example this video and this picture
Or Eau Rouge at Spa -
See the difference?
It is often a common refrain amongst fans and detractors alike that Formula 1 doesn't let fans get too close to the drivers, autograph sessions excepting. Even during race broadcasts the driver is pretty much just a helmet and gloves, being cocooned inside a race car. So it is sad that we don't get shots of the driver like these (Yes, gopro I know but still want!)
Some of the camera work during the Indian GP was pretty good in that aspect, showing elevation changes at some corners and makes the few of us who don't play the F1 video game how these things are in real life.
Oh well, chalk up another rant against FOM and their doings.

As important as the camerawork... the directors choice of what to focus on and for how long. More so in other forms of racing, as the f1 guys are pretty good, but too often they cut away from action before it's fully played out.
More onboard, and at least twice per hour of racing there should be a complete, uninterrupted lap of onboard, preferably during some close racing action.
The absolute worst is when they start cutting to shots the winning team's crew celebrating in the pits while other cars are still on track racing for position.

I wonder what would happen if try handed the race over to a Hollywood director. Probably too much flash and bang, but who knows...

Totally agree on the director cutting away from battles. And the onboards. Why can't you show a single full lap from the onboards. That is the closest thing to a drivers POV over a full lap!
